Our Take
CiteSpace is a bibliometric analysis and visualization tool that helps researchers map relationships in scholarly literature, identify clusters, and explore how topics or citations change over time. It can support a literature review by revealing influential references, emerging themes, and connections worth investigating further.
The maps depend on the selected databases, search strategy, time range, and data-cleaning choices. Missing records, inconsistent author or keyword names, and parameter settings can substantially change the resulting network; a visually prominent cluster is not automatically an important or reliable research finding.
Document the databases, search terms, date range, and settings used, and clean duplicate or inconsistent records before interpreting maps. Verify important papers in their original sources and combine bibliometric patterns with close reading rather than treating visualization as a replacement for critical review.
