Our Take
MAXQDA helps researchers organize and analyze interviews, focus groups, documents, images, audio, and other qualitative materials. Its coding, memoing, retrieval, visualization, and mixed-methods features make it useful for building a transparent analysis workflow, and optional AI features can assist with tasks such as summaries or coding suggestions.
The software organizes evidence; it does not decide what a theme means or whether an interpretation is justified. AI-assisted coding can overlook context, impose categories that do not fit, or make a complex participant statement seem simpler than it is. Some functions also depend on the product edition or add-on.
Develop a codebook that matches your research questions, test it on a varied subset of data, and document changes to codes and interpretations. Check AI suggestions against the original passages, retain analytic memos, and follow your study's consent, confidentiality, and data-storage requirements.
